iPad Pro 12.9 Renders Show What Apple Might Be Cooking Up Next Week

September 12th is the data that Apple has penciled in to launch new iPhones and new tablets (and perhaps some additional hardware products). We have seen leaks that claim to give a glimpse at what the new iPhone XS will look like along with the coming Apple Watch refresh. The new iPhones are expected to have refreshed internals and new colors offered. We haven't heard much about what Apple has in store for its new iPad Pro tablets, other than a leaked icon from iOS 12 that showed a tablet with much thinner bezels. Now OnLeaks and MySmartPrice have teamed up to offer new renders based on leaked information.

The source information used for these renders is from OnLeaks and shows a tablet that very much looks like the leaked icon we saw last month. Despite the similarities, these renders may not be 100% accurate, but they are thought to be close. These renders are of the iPad Pro 12.9, and some specs are offered up along with the images. Apple is also expected to launch a redesigned iPad Pro 10.5-inch tablet.

The renders show a tablet that looks very different from what Apple offered previously. One of the main differences is that there is no home button. The home button had to be killed off due to the very thin bezels that Apple has implemented on the tablet, just as it did the iPhone X. The big news is that while the bezels are very thin in the iPad Pro 12.9 renders, they are thick enough to house the camera used for Face ID. That means that there is no annoying and ugly notch.

A TrueDepth camera lives in the iPad Pro's top bezel in portrait mode. That presents one of the compromises expected with the new tablet, namely Face ID might be non-functional in landscape mode. The button-like bumps on the bottom, back of the tablet above the charge port are reportedly the Smart Connector for the keyboard cover. That location is important and could be the biggest drawback of the new iPad Pro 12.9. If accurate that would mean that when typing the tablet would require portrait orientation. That is very far from ideal and would certainly impact what you can get on the screen while using the tablet for word processing. It's hard to imagine Apple nixing the ability to type on the iPad Pro horizontally in laptop-style mode.

On the right side in these renders you see the volume buttons at the top of the tablet. In the middle of that same side is what appears to be another button, no one has an idea what that might be. One thing to point out is that there is no 3.5mm headphone port on this device.

Both iPad Pro models are expected to use True Tone IPS screens instead of OLEDs. That should help keep prices lower than if Apple went with an OLED. On the chipset front, rumors indicate the chip might be called the A12X and use TSMC's 7nm FinFET tech. The CPU is expected to have 8 cores and at least 4GB of RAM with up to 512GB of storage rounding out the specs.
