iPhone 5 Benchmarks Fast and Sells Even Faster, Tops 5 Million Sales in Three Days
As we discovered during our formal review of the iPhone 5, Apple's newest smartphone isn't just fast, it pretty much smokes the top Android devices in benchmarks. Much to the approval of Apple, the iPhone 5 is also lighting up the sales chart, a point the Cupertino company is all too happy to gloat about.
According to Apple, the device that topped 2 million pre-orders in just 24 hours has now notched more than 5 million sales since it was launched three short days ago on September 21. It's not quite the 6-10 million in sales some analysts were predicting, a point investors reacted negatively to by sending Apple's share price down by more than $10 so far today, but it's a number CEO Tim Cook is happy with.
"Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible," said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. "While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone.”
Apple's website lists new iPhone 5 orders as being available to ship in 3-4 weeks. Adding another wrinkle to the supply situation is a riot that broke out at one of Foxconn's plants in China. Over 2,000 workers are reported to have been involved in a brawl that supposedly started off as a personal dispute (according to Foxconn), but may have been instigated by security guards (according to Twitter posts by folks in the region). Foxconn, if you're not aware, is in charge of building all those millions of iPhone devices.
In addition to topping 5 million iPhone 5 sales over the weekend, Apple said that 100 million iOS devices have now been updated to iOS 6, the newest version of the company's mobile OS.
