Keiji Inafune's Mighty No. 9 for PC Races Past $900,000 Kickstarter Goal in 3 Days

Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune did it. He raised more than his stated goal of $900,000 in a Kickstarter campaign to fund Mighty No. 9, a classic Japanese side-scrolling title evolved for the modern era on the PC platform. It's been dubbed by media outlets as the spiritual successor to Mega Man, and certainly the game in progress looks like the character he created long ago. Not only that, but many of Inafune's team of developers have experience with various Mega Man titles.

Similarities aside, this isn't Mega Man, it's Mighty No. 9. According to the Kickstarter page, it's supposed to take the best aspects of the 8-bit and 16-bit era classics that you know and love, and transform them with modern tech, fresh mechanics, and fan input. The end results promises to be "something fresh and amazing."

You'll play as Beck, the 9th in a line of a powerful robots and the only one not infected by a computer virus that has caused mechanized creatures to run amok. As you progress through the game, you can use weapons and abilities that you steal from your enemies.

Mighty No. 9 is being developed for the PC with gamepad support. It will be made available in Spring 2015 through Steam and DRM-free digital distribution methods. Should the campaign reach certain stretch goals, the game will also be ported over to home consoles, Mac and Linux.

There's a good chance those stretch goals will be made. The project debuted on August 31 and has already skyrocketed to over $937,000 with still 29 days to go.
