Kickstarter Darling Pebble Smartwatch Lands at Best Buy

The Pebble smartwatch has come a long way. In the spring of 2012, the team behind Pebble racked up millions in funding on Kickstarter after launching a campaign aimed at raising just $100,000. Now, the smartwatch is available at electronics retailing giant Best Buy.

The device is “coming soon”, but 9-to-5 Mac found a screenshot that indicates that Pebble would be in stock as of July 7th. The $149.99 smartwatch features more or less the same design Pebble has been teasing for over a year, although the only available color appears to be black, at least at this time.

Pebble has a 2x1.3-inch face and weighs 5.3 ounces, and it’s compatible with Android devices running version 2.3 or later, as well as iPhone 4, 4S, and 5 and iPods. (We assume “iPod” means “iPod touch”.) With Bluetooth, Pebble lets you control your mobile device’s music, view notifications and texts, and accept or decline incoming calls.

The race is most definitely on in the smartwatch market, and the competition will soon be steep; industry giants Apple, Google, Samsung, Sony, Microsoft are all reportedly developing smartwatches, and that’s in addition to other small projects such as Boddie and Agent. However, securing a spot on Best Buy shelves will help Pebble a great deal.
