KitKat Now On Over 5 Percent Of Android Devices
Slowly but surely, Android 4.4.x KitKat is finding its way onto an increasing number of mobile handsets, tablets, and hybrid devices. According to Google's Developers Dashboard for Android, KitKat is now found on 5.3 percent of Android devices, a figure that's generated by analyzing devices that have checked into Google Play during the past 7 days.
Behind KitKat is Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.x to Android 4.3), the second most popular version of the open source operating system. It holds a 61.4 percent share of the Android market. Combined with KitKat's prominence, the two most recent versions of Android account for two-thirds of the entire market (66.7 percent).
Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3 to Android 2.3.7) is still holding strong to third place with a 17.8 percent share, followed by Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.3 to Android 4.0.4) at 14.3 percent, Froyo (Android 2.2) at 1.1 percent, and Honeycomb (Android 3.2) at 0.1 percent. Since the new Google Play Store app doesn't support versions of Android prior to version 2.2, older devices are not included in this data. However, Google says that of August 2013, pre-Android 2.2 devices accounted for about 1 percent.
