Watch Koenigsegg Set A Production Car Land Speed World Record On A Nevada Highway

Koenigsegg feels the need, the need for speed. It has managed to get the state of Nevada to shut down and 11-mile section of route 160 that runs between Las Vegas and Pahrump, Nevada, on Saturday and Sunday, to allow the Swedish maker of hypercars to attempt to set a land-speed world record for the fastest production car. The record attempt will employ a Koenigsegg Agera RS.

Koenigsegg was granted a special permit by the Nevada Department of Transportation and the 11-mile section of road to be used is said to be straight. The beast of a car that will be attempting the record setting top speed run packs 1,360 hp and is aiming to top the current record of 268 mph set by a Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. A successful run will also grab a record for top speed on an open public highway with some video game-like shenanigans.

The section of roadway was closed off both days from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. with traffic being diverted onto the northbound lanes in the closed area. The event is being hosted by Spring Mountain Motor Resort and Country Club near Pahrump, Nevada and the event has reportedly been in the works for about a year. The Nevada Highway Patrol provided traffic control and escorts during the event.

The real question is did Koenigsegg actually grab the record? With a top speed averaged at 277.9 mph Koenigsegg's Agera RS is now officially the fastest production car in the world. Koenigsegg confirmed the record setting run with a tweet Saturday and you can watch the run right here...

When Bugatti set its speed record, it ran on an oval at the Volkswagen Ehra Lessein test track. Hitting a top speed of 277.9 mph on a public road is infinitely cooler. Captain Chaos would be proud. The driver for the record setting run was Niklas Lilja, a Koenigsegg factory driver.

Hennessey will certainly have something to say about this record. At SEMA 2017, the company rolled out a new American-made hypercar called the Hennessey Venom F5 packing 1,600 hp and aiming for a top speed of 300 mph. What a drag race it would be to see the Agera RS and the Venom F5 duke it out on that straight 11-mile stretch of highway.
