Lebron James Ally-oops To Samsung With Immersive 12-Minute Gear VR Documentary
One of the most interesting use case scenarios for virtual reality technology to date, at least from this sports fan's perspective, is getting an inside and immersive look at what professional athletes go through to get to where they are. We saw an example recently when Google teamed with Visa and Bank of America to provide a 360-degree view of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady on the practice field, and now Samsung and Oculus are following suit by offering up a documentary of Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James and his training regime.
It's a 12-minute 360-degree video called "Striving for Greatness" that's currently exclusive to Gear VR owners. The video gets viewers up close and personal with LeBron James as he discusses and showcases his workouts. It's filled with interviews and rare inside looks that you won't find anywhere else.
Gear VR owners can download the video from the Oculus store or through Samsung's Milk VR app. Once downloaded, Gear VR owners can jump into the world of LeBron James and look around in any direction. It's not quite as immersive as being able to walk around, but it's still neat to be able to choose a video angle or simply take in the 360-degree landscapes.
For everyone else, there's a non-interactive commercial on YouTube featuring Public Enemy's Welcome to the Terrordome. It's a minute-and-a-half clip culminating with LeBron James stepping into a gym.
For a more immersive experience, you can find just over two-and-a-half minutes of footage on LeBron James' Facebook page that was previously released by Uninterrupted, a multimedia network co-created by LeBron James.
