Lenovo ThinkPad Lineup Deemed "Semi-Rugged"
When you think ThinkPad, what do you think? Plain, classic,
traditional, all-business, etc.? Probably, but the word "sturdy" is apt
to be throw in that mix as well. Lenovo has made it a point of focus to
always ensure that the business-minded ThinkPad line was well equipped
to handle dozens of airport transfers, being dropped in airport
security lines and enduring the daily stresses of the corporate world.
Now, the company is coming out and shouting from the roof tops that its ThinkPads are amongst the toughest in the land -- for "non-rugged" notebooks, anyway. The ThinkPad X200, X301, X200s, X200 Tablet, T400, T500, R400 and SL300 laptops have all met a "barrage of military specifications tests and are enhanced with specially-designed durability features such as an air-bag like protection system and a roll cage in select models." In other words, each of those models is now certified for "semi-rugged computing" as they all meet a litany of military specifications.
We suspect Lenovo is pushing this angle in order to get their ThinkPads
out of just the office and into the hands of field workers,
technicians, police forces, etc. Indeed, Tom Ribble, executive
director, Worldwide ThinkPad Product Marketing, noted that "the truth
is we’ve always built tough laptops that can weather extreme conditions
from hiking the rainforests of the Amazon to flying in space." The
eight ThinkPads mentioned above were all able to survive low pressure,
humidity, vibration, extreme temperature and dust tests, though we're
obviously not told exactly what kind of condition they were left in
after it was all over. But hey, they worked.
Also of note, Lenovo has announced today that its most popular notebook -- the ThinkPad T400 -- can be ordered with an optional 680-nit high brightness panel, which makes it nearly four times brighter than previous ThinkPad screens and should help those who compute outdoors immensely.

Low Temperature – Tests operation at minus 4 degrees
Temperature Shock – Fluctuates between minus 4 and up to 140 degrees to test operation
