High resolution photos and videos aren't getting any smaller, and that means there is a need for more capacious storage solutions. Lexar has heard the call, and announced a new 1 terabyte SDXC Class 10 UHS-1 memory card for digital SLR cameras, HD and 3D video recorders, and other devices.

In terms of storage capacity, things sure have come a long way in the past decade and a half, as Lexar points out.

"Almost 15 years ago, Lexar announced a 1GB SD card. Today, we are excited to announce 1TB of storage capacity in the same convenient form factor. As consumers continue to demand greater storage for their cameras, the combination of high-speed performance with a 1TB option now offers a solution for content creators who shoot large volumes of high resolution images and 4K video," said Joey Lopez, Senior Marketing Manager.

The new Lexar Professional 633x SDXC UHS-I card is rated to deliver read speeds of up to 95 megabytes per second (MB/s). So, it has the capacity and speed to transfer 4K video, as well as 1080p and 3D video. And of course it should handle burst photos in RAW.

Lexar says its new memory card has been extensively tested on more than 1,100 digital devices. The insinuation there is that compatibility should not be a problem.

Still, it's the capacity here that is the primary selling point. Lexar appears to be the first to market with a 1TB SD card for consumers. Rival SanDisk unveiled a prototype 1TB SDXC card in 2016, but for whatever reason it never made it to market.

As you might imagine, Lexar's 1TB memory card isn't cheap—the MSRP sits at $499.99. It does, however, come with a lifetime warranty.
