LG G6 Gets Tasty Android 8.0 Oreo Goodness With Beta Software Launch
Owners of the LG G6 are getting close to becoming part of an exclusive club of Android 8.0 Oreo users. While the G6 is still running Nougat, which shipped with the phone when it came out around nine months ago (March 2017), LG has made available an Oreo build in beta form in China. Typically when that happens, a final release is not far behind, and that should be the case here as well.
The Android 8.0 Oreo beta software version is listed as V19A and available for several supported models, including the LGM-G600L, LGM-G600S, LGM-G600K, LGM-G600LR, LGM-G600SR, LGM-G600KR, LGM-G600LP, LGM-G600SP, and LGM-G600KP. It's not clear if LG is planning on making an Oreo beta available G6 owners in other countries, though either way, it's good to see LG progressing towards an Oreo release.
This latest beta follows the stable release of Android 8.0 Oreo for LG's V30 handset in South Korea, which it started rolling out the day after Christmas.
In total, not many devices are running Android 8.0 Oreo, at least comparatively. The latest release of Google's mobile operating system is only found on 0.5 percent of all Android devices, according to the Android Developers Dashboard. That is based on data collected during the 7-day period ending December 11.
The most popular Android version is Android 6.0 Marshmallow, which is found on 29.7 percent of Android devices. After that, Android 5.x Lollipop is the most popular at 26.3 percent, followed by Android 7.x Nougat at 23.3 percent and Android 4.4 KitKat at 13.4 percent. The remaining versions of Android are all in single digit percentages.
As for the G6, it is a premium smartphone with a 5.7-inch QHD+ IPS display powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 SoC and 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM. It also has 32GB of built-in storage expandable via microSD, dual 13MP rear cameras, and a 5MP front shooter, along with a 3,300 mAh battery supporting Quick Charge 3.0.
