LG G8 ThinQ And V50 ThinQ 5G Flagship Android 9 Pie Phones Storm MWC 2019

LG has gone official with its new G8 ThinQ phone, and if you've been paying attention over the past few months, then you already know quite a bit about the device. First and foremost, this is the first smartphone in LG's long-running G-Series to incorporate an OLED display instead of an LCD.

OLED technology is something that we've all just taken for granted these days, and even Apple came around to the display tech for its flagship phones back in 2017 with the iPhone X. With the LG G8 ThinQ, the QHD+ FullVision Display (3120x1440) measures a full 6.1-inches diagonally (coming in at 564 pixels per inch) with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio.

Powering the smartphone is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor that is paired with 6GB of RAM and just 128GB of storage. Although that might not seem like a lot of internal storage, LG at least provides a microSD slot that supports up to 2TB of external storage.

With the exception of the OLED display and Snapdragon 855, the G8 ThinQ is pretty standard fare for a flagship. There are two primary cameras on the rear: a 16MP wide-angle camera (f/1.9) and a 12MP standard-angle camera (f/1.5). Up front, there's an 8MP (f/1.7) selfie camera along with a "Z Camera" Time of Flight (ToF) sensor. The REAL3 ToF sensor can be used for biometric authentication for Face Unlock along with augmented reality and virtual reality applications.

LG has also positioned a traditional optical fingerprint sensor on the rear of the smartphone and you'll find a 3500 mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support via the USB-C port. There's a Boombox speaker (LG is known for its enviable audio quality) and a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC with DTX:X 3D Surround Sound. LG has also managed to incorporate a "quaint" FM radio, IP68 dust/water resistance, and the smartphone adheres to MIL-STD 810G compliance standards.

The LG G8 ThinQ of course runs Android 9 Pie and will be available in Aurora Black, Platinum Gray and Carmine Red. It will be available to purchase "in the coming weeks" according to LG.

But that's not all that LG has in store today at MWC 2019; the company also launched the V50 ThinQ 5G, which we've also previously discussed. This smartphone also uses a QHD+ OLED panel with a resolution of 3120x1440, but bumps the display size to 6.4 inches.

You'll find the same Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage (with microSD expansion). However, what makes the V50 ThinQ 5G stand apart is right in its name: it has a 5G modem courtesy of the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50. But of course, the Snapdragon 855 SoC provides backwards compatibility with 4G LTE and 3G networks (which you will definitely be relying on considering that 5G availability is minuscule at this point).

The LG V50 ThinQ 5G incorporates a large 4000 mAh battery to help fuel the 5G radio and there's a triple-camera arrangement on the back (16MP wide, 12MP standard, 12MP telephoto). On the front, there are two selfie cameras (8MP standard, 5MP wide).

The LG V50 ThinQ 5G will be available as a Sprint exclusive "in the coming months" according to Sprint.
