LG’s Mid-Range X Marshmallow Smartphones Each Tout One Flagship Feature
If you ask 10 different people what they value most in a smartphone, you might get up to 10 different answers. You'd certainly get a handful—some would point to screen size as the most important feature, while others might place a higher priority on camera quality or speed. It all boils down to personal preference, and with that in mind, LG is taking a bit of a unique approach to its newest Android smartphones.
Dubbed the X series, LG's approach to its new line of handsets is to offer "one exceptional feature at a price that rivals mid-range smartphones." It's kicking things off with the X cam and X screen, both of which the company lightly detailed today with plans of more fully disclosing at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week.
"Everyone has a favorite smartphone feature," said Juno Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. "At LG, we think there’s room for devices that do one thing very well and that customers shouldn’t have to pay for features that they don’t want. At the end of the day, we’re committed to offering consumers more choices."
As indicated by its name, the standout feature on the X cam is the camera experience. It has an 8-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies and video chat, and on the backside are two more cameras, one that's 13 megapixels and another that's 5 megapixels. LG didn't say why it has dual-shooters on back (most likely it's for depth of field effects), but the company did make the claim that the X cam delivers one of the most advanced camera experiences in a mass-tier smartphone to date.
Aside from the cameras, the X cam features a 5.2-inch Full HD display powered by a 1.14GHz octa-core processor and 2GB of RAM. It also boasts 16GB of internal storage, 2520mAh battery, LTE connectivity, and of course Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
Moving on to the X screen, its major selling point is an always-on second display that up until now has only been available on LG's premium V10 handset (it will also be a feature of LG's forthcoming G5). It sits above the main 5.93-inch HD display and gives users easy access to frequent apps, the ability to answer calls without interrupting the current activity, and other conveniences.
LG equipped the X screen with a 1.2GHz quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM. It also has 16GB of internal storage, 2300mAh battery, LTE connectivity, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
Both phones will ship first to key markets in Asia, Europe, and Latin America starting next month. No word on price or whether LG plans on bringing these handsets to the U.S.
