MetroPCS Launches LTE Service In Los Angeles and Philadelphia
4G is spreading, and spreading faster than anyone could have imagined
just a year ago. And now that T-Mobile is in the game with their "4G"
HSPA+ services, it's looking like 3G is just a thing of the past. Of
course, 3G will in fact be a dominant mobile technology for years to
come, but the more areas blanketed with 4G, the better. MetroPCS, a
growing pre-paid carrier, has just announced commercial 4G LTE service
in Los Angeles and Philadelphia.
While T-Mobile's 4G uses HSPA+ and Sprint/Clearwire uses WiMAX, LTE is a growing technology that isn't deployed much in America. Verizon is expected to switch to LTE for their 4G services in 2011, but it's MetroPCS beating them to the punch. This launch marks the first deployment of LTE to either city, and the world's first LTE phone (the Samsung Craft) is also being sold now in Philly and LA.
In addition to getting higher speeds than consumers on a 3G network, MetroPCS customers are treated to no annual contracts and flat-rate services as low as $55/month. MetroPCS is offering the Samsung Craft in Los Angeles and Philadelphia area stores and online for $299 plus tax after $50 instant rebate, while supplies last. The device operates with a 3.3 inch AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) screen, and comes with a 2GB MicroSD card pre-loaded with Paramount Pictures' hit movie "Star Trek - The Future Begins." The Samsung Craft also contains a combination touchscreen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, Samsung's TouchWiz(TM) user interface to surf and text message, 3.2 megapixel camera with flash and camcorder and Wi-Fi capability.
With the launch of service in Los Angeles and Philadelphia, MetroPCS now provides 4G LTE services in five major metropolitan cities, including Dallas/Fort Worth, Detroit and Las Vegas. MetroPCS intends to expand its 4G services into additional major metropolitan areas later this year and into early 2011, including Atlanta, Boston, Jacksonville, Miami, New York, Orlando, Sacramento, San Francisco and Tampa. Additionally, MetroPCS is committed to meeting consumers' demands relating to the small screen, and has plans to introduce new handsets and smartphones in the future.
