Microsoft Has A Big Surprise Coming Today Regarding Original Xbox Backwards Compatibility
Microsoft is teasing a potentially major announcement regarding original Xbox backwards compatibility on the Xbox One. In a blog post, the company said it will have sometime to share on the matter on the next episode of Inside Xbox, which is scheduled to air on Tuesday, April 10 at 3:30 pm Pacific (6:30 pm Pacific). In the meantime, Microsoft is content to let users' minds run wild with what is in store.
"One of our most common requests is for Original Xbox Backward Compatibility news, and we’ll be starting off the show with a big update on just that. Stay tuned next Monday for a full breakdown of the news and content you can expect on Inside Xbox. Mostly full that is, as we reserve the right to keep a moment or two fully under wraps for a proper surprise," Microsoft said.
Microsoft also put out a 15-second teaser video with the description, "Everything old is new again." We will have to wait and see to what extent Microsoft plans on expanding backwards compatibility to original Xbox titles on the Xbox One. As it stands, there are 13 original Xbox games that can be played on a modern system. They include the following:
- Ninja Gaiden Black
- Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
- Fuzion Frenzy
- Sid Meier's Pirates!
- Grabbed by the Ghoulies
- Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
- BloodRayne 2
- Red Faction II
- Dead to Rights
- Prince of Persia
- KOF Neowave
There are a number of OG games in BC pipeline, they won't drop aas often as the 360 games but team is working to validate and get permissions. More complicated with some just due to the age of the rights etc.," Spencer said.
This is something that Microsoft has obviously been working on for some time. If we had to guess, the big reveal is that a lot more original Xbox games are headed to the Backwards Compatibility list very soon, though it's probably not reasonable expect that every original Xbox title will be supported.
