Microsoft Blocks Windows 10 October 2018 Update Due To Incompatibility With These Intel Platforms

Windows 10
Microsoft has begun pushing out its October 2018 Update for Windows 10, which introduces a bunch of new features and upgrades, including a dark mode theme for Explorer. Unfortunately for some users, the update is not arriving as expected. Apparently there is a compatibility issue with some Intel systems, so Microsoft is blocking the update to affected PCs.

The glitch affects a range of Intel Display Audio device drivers. According to Microsoft, installing the update can result in excessive power demand and reduced battery life. The specific driver is listed as intcdaud.sys, versions 10.25.0.3 through 10.25.0.8.

This is the message that affected users are seeing...

Windows 10 Setup Message

"To ensure a seamless experience, we are blocking devices from being offered Windows 10 version 1809, until updated Intel device drivers are installed on your current operating system. We recommend that you do not attempt to manually update to Windows 10, version 1809, using the Update Now button or the Media Creation Tool from the Microsoft Software Download Center until newer Intel device drivers are available with the update," Microsoft says.

That's the bad news, and it applies to systems running 6th generation (Skylake) or newer processors. The good news is Intel has already fixed the issue with a graphics driver update. Anyone who is running a 6th generation or later Intel rig should ensure they are running the Intel Graphics Driver version 24.20.100.6286 or newer, all of which have the updated audio driver, before attempting to install the October 2018 update.

Here's a short demo that shows how to find your driver version...

The October 2018 Update delivers the usual round of security enhancements, but also introduces updates to the Microsoft Edge browser, AI assist for the keyboard, HDR controls, and further refinements to the Material Design UI aesthetic, to name a view.

If you haven't updated already and know that your PC is in shape, the easiest way to get it is to head into System Settings > Update & Security and click the 'Check for updates' button. You can jump straight there by typing "Update" into the Cortana search bar. If it's not showing up, head over to Microsoft's Download Windows 10 page and click the 'Update now' button.
