Microsoft Gaffe Reveals Windows 10 Edge Browser Extensions Could Soon Be Upon Us
Microsoft seems to be getting close to turning on support for extensions in its Edge browser for Windows 10. Exactly when that will happen remains to be seen, but in the meantime, a Twitter user (@h0x0d) posted screen grabs of a website serving up a pair of extensions in Edge to Windows Insiders.
The website has since been taken offline, but according to the screenshots, Microsoft and its partners have been fiddling with at least two extensions, one for Pinterest that adds a Pin-It button to Edge, and one for Reddit (Reddit Enhancement Suite) that provides a better browsing experiencing on the website. Both extensions were last updated on November 25, 2015.
Had things gone to plan, Microsoft would have turned on support for extensions in Edge by now. Instead, Microsoft made the decision to delay support until sometime in 2016, presumably so it can test the new feature and work out any kinks.
"We're committed to providing customers with a personalized web experience, which is why bringing extensions to Microsoft Edge continues to be a high priority," Microsoft said in October. "We're actively working to develop a secure extension model to make the safest and most reliable browser for our customers, and look forward to sharing more in a future Windows 10 update in 2016."
Adding support for extensions will be critical in boosting Edge's share of the browser market, which current sits at just 2.81 percent, according to data by Net Applications.
