Microsoft Lumia 950 XL Preorders Open For $649 Unlocked, Includes Free Display Dock Offer
Earlier this morning, AT&T opened up preorders for Microsoft’s 5.2-inch Lumia 950. Customers can get the device for $149.99 with a new, two-year contract or pay for it in monthly installments with Next. This afternoon, Microsoft kicked off preorders for its larger brother: the Lumia 950 XL.
The Lumia 950 XL is only available unlocked and off-contact direct from Microsoft, which means that you will be paying the full retail price of $649. For that price, you’ll receive an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor with 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage (expandable via a microSD slot), 5.7-inch 2560x1440 display, 20MP PureView rear camera with OIS and a 5MP front-facing camera. You’ll also find a generous 3300mAh battery which is recharged using a USB Type-C connector on the bottom of the device.
The Lumia 950 XL, which is available in white or black, will also be offered with a pretty sweet accessory: a free Display Dock which can be claimed using the Lumia Offers app. The Microsoft Display Dock connects via the USB-C port and provides HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, and USB 2.0 connections for your display and peripherals. When used in conjunction with Continuum in Windows 10, your Lumia 950 or Lumia 950 XL is transformed into a “PC-like work environment” with a close facsimile of the Windows 10 desktop complete with large-scaled version of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
The Display Dock normally costs $99, so for Microsoft to include it for free with the Lumia 950 XL is quite a treat. In fact, if would definitely nudge us away from the Lumia 950 which costs $549, but doesn’t come with the free Display Dock offer.
We should also mention that while the Lumia 950 XL is being sold carrier unlocked, it will only work on two of the four biggest wireless networks in the United States: AT&T and T-Mobile. Microsoft doesn’t seem interest in offering the either the Lumia 950 XL or the smaller Lumia 950 on America’s largest network, Verizon Wireless, or Sprint.
