Microsoft Readies Over-The-Air TV Tuner For U.S. And Canadian Xbox One Gamers

Microsoft just seriously upped the Xbox One's game as a true living room media device by rolling out one of the most requested features by TV viewers, an over-the-air TV tuner. In partnership with Hauppauge, a familiar name in the TV tuner space, what this means is that Xbox One owners can grab signals from local broadcast networks such as CBS, FOX, NBC, and PBS without a subscription cost.

Chew on that for a moment, savor it, and then wash it down with prospect of pairing the over-the-air TV tuner with Sling TV, the recently launched low-cost subscription service for live TV that gets you access to cable channels like ESPN, TNT, Disney Channel, Adult Swim, and more starting at just $20 per month. See where we're going with this?

If you're wanting to cut the cord and wave farewell to your cable or satellite TV provider, the Xbox One is a viable option. The recent additions of Sling TV and the over-the-air TV tuner join a robust platform that already provides access to Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go and more.

"Starting today, members of the Xbox One preview program in the U.S. and Canada can get over-the-air TV by purchasing the Hauppauge WinTV-955Q (MSRP $79.99 at Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop and Micro Center), and an HDTV antenna. In the next few months, Xbox will be partnering with Hauppauge to release a lower cost version of this tuner, the Hauppauge TV Tuner for Xbox One, retailing for MSRP $59.99, and available to everyone in the U.S. and Canada," Microsoft announced in a blog post.

Before you call your cable company and say something you might regret, it pays to do your homework first. Not all channels are available in every area, and to see which ones you're likely to have access to, head over to gomohu.com/xbox and enter your ZIP code, or optionally your full address to see which channels are likely to show up with each antenna.

Assuming everything checks out, setup is a snap. You just need to connect your antenna to your tuner, and plug the tuner into one of the USB ports on the back of your Xbox One. Follow the on-screen instructions, nuke a bag of popcorn, and catch a few flicks!
