Project Spartan Browser Comes To Lumia Smartphones With Windows 10 Build 10051

Nearly two months after the first Technical Preview of Windows 10 for smartphones, Microsoft has followed up with a second build. And thankfully for Lumia fans worldwide, this latest build supports a ton more smartphones than the initial build and brings with it a wealth of new features that will also find their way into the final release this summer.

The latest release is Build 10051 and is being pushed out now to Windows Phone Insiders currently on the Fast ring for updates. Build 10051 includes an “early version” of the Project Spartan browser for mobile devices that should be a big boon for fans waiting for its release. Project Spartan, however, is not currently set as the default browser, so you will still have to put up with IE11 for a little while longer.

Other new features include updated Mail, Calendar, Phone, Messaging, People, and Maps apps. Also included is a refreshed App Switcher that can be invoked “by pressing and holding the back button on your phone to see your recently used apps.”

Microsoft’s Gabe Aul said that unfortunately, hardware incompatibilities relating to display scaling with the Lumia Icon, 930, and 640XL mean that they are left out of Build 10051. “We need to add code to support new scaling thresholds for these devices,” said Aul. “That work is underway, so we expect to see support for them in the near future.”
