Microsoft Unveils Surface Go 10-Inch Tablet Starting At $399, Fanless And Light Windows 10 Device
Luckily, it looks as though most of the early speculation about the tablet's specifications were right on the money. However, we now know that the 10-inch 3:2 aspect ratio display has a resolution of 1800x1200. That's quite a step back from the 2736x1824 resolution of the Surface Pro, but we have to keep in mind the lower price of entry. There's no mistaking this for anything but a Surface device, and you'll still find a kickstand and a magnesium body like the more expensive Surface Pro.
When it comes to what's ticking inside, you'll find an Intel Pentium Gold 4415Y across the board. This is a 7th generation Kaby Lake-based processor that features dual cores and is capable of executing four threads. The chip is clocked at 1.6GHz and has a TDP of 6 watts. As has been previously rumored, customers can choose from either 4GB or 8GB of RAM, while storage options check in at 64GB and 128GB respectively.
We should note that the miserly processor means that the Surface Go is a fanless device, which should be a boon to those that hate hearing the whir of fan blades when demanding apps are in the foregound. Microsoft also confirmed that the Surface Go is equipped with the USB-C port (a first for a Surface device) and will be available later this year with optional LTE connectivity (only Wi-Fi models will ship initially).
The Surface Go will be available for preorder starting tomorrow and will be available in stores starting August 2nd. At this moment, Microsoft is only confirming two configurations: the base system has 4GB of RAM and a 64GB SSD for $399. A maxed-out system with 8GB RAM and a 128GB SSD will run $549. Unfortunately, there's no word on how much the LTE option will cost when it arrives in a few months. In addition, the Surface Go will be compatible with the existing Surface Pen and can be equipped with an optional Type Cover ($99) or a Signature Type Cover ($129.99).
