Microsoft Launches Surface Laptop 2, Surface Pro 6 With 8th Gen Intel Core And Surface Studio 2
Starting off with the Surface Laptop 2, Microsoft has upgraded the internals with Intel's 8th generation Core processors. In addition, you're no longer relegated to 4GB of RAM on base system; that has now been doubled to 8GB, with top SKUs getting 16GB. The Surface Laptop 2 is now up to 85 percent faster than the first-generation device.
The updated Surface Laptop 2 may have gained some firepower under the hood, but we can't say the same when it comes to its external ports. As previously reported, Microsoft hasn't added USB-C connectivity to its laptop despite the fact that recently introduced Surface Go and the Surface Book 2 include the ports. Perhaps as a consolation, Microsoft has brought back the matte black finish that debuted the first-generation Surface RT convertibles.
All the things that we liked about the old model transfer over to the Surface Laptop 2 like its comfortable keyboard and 13.5-inch PixelSense display.
The Surface Pro has also been updated with 8th generation Intel Core processors, and is now called the Surface Pro 6. That's interesting considering that Microsoft dropped the number suffix for the previous generation, but we digress. Microsoft's Panos Panay says that the Surface Pro 6 has up to 13.5 hours of battery life, is 67 percent more powerful than its predecessor, and is available with up to 16GB of RAM and up to a 1TB SSD. In addition, it also is available with a new matte black finish. Like the Surface Laptop 2, the Surface Pro 6 also doesn’t include USB-C connectivity.
Microsoft says that the Surface Laptop 2 will be available starting from $999, while the Surface Pro 6 will start from $899. Both will be available starting October 16th.
Not to be left out, the Surface Studio 2 ditches the hybrid hard drives of its predecessor in favor of SSDs across the board (up to 2TB in capacity). The display now provides 22 percent more contrast and is 38 percent brighter (500+ nits). Although Microsoft didn't say what processors are inside the new Surface Studio 2 (we've heard that it's Kaby Lake), it's been described as the most powerful Surface ever and it also brings along with its NVIDIA Pascal GPUs.
