Microsoft has an event set for Octoberwhere it is set to unveil a new (or thoroughly refreshed) family of Surface computing hardware. The company sent out invites late last month for the event, and now Surface Chief Panos Panay is hyping up the big reveal on Twitter.

According to sources for The Verge, the event will be more than just about hardware, and will also focus on new experiences. We have the feeling that this is in reference to Windows Lite, which is a cut-down version of Windows 10 that will be going head-to-head with Google's Chrome OS

The stakes are high with this event, as Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella will reportedly be in attendance to share some stage time with Panay. It should be noted that Nadella chose not to make an appearance at last year's event, which has many hoping that besides an announcement about Windows Lite, that we might actually get to finally see the long-rumored dual-screen "Centaurus" Surface device in the flesh.

Besides Centaurus, Microsoft is widely expected to launch a new Surface Pro 7. The folks over at WinFuture have allegedly managed to obtain the list of SKUs that will be available for the convertible, which will include an Intel Core i3, 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD for the entry-level model. It still boggles the mind that Microsoft would bother with a machine with a paltry 4GB of RAM, but the company probably clings to this SKU to boast a "low" base price. At the top of the heap will be a Core i7/16GB/512GB SKU.

According to a separate report, this next generation Surface Pro 7 along with the Surface Laptop will be packing 10nm Intel Ice Lake processors. In addition to Ice Lake, it's widely expected that Microsoft will allow USB-C connectivity to proliferate through its lineup after initially only being limited to the entry-level Surface Go.

Stay tuned as we learn more about what Microsoft has in store for next month's Surface event.
