Check Out Microsoft's Surface Pro 7, Surface Pro X, And Surface Laptop 3 As We Go Hands-On

Surface Home Hero
Yesterday, Microsoft unloaded a bevy of updates to its Surface family including the refreshed Surface Pro 7, the Surface Laptop 3 (with a new 15-inch variant), and the all-new Surface Pro X. The company also gave us a glimpse at two products that will launch in 2020: the Surface Neo and the Surface Duo.

We were able to get hands on the former three products and have some images that we'd like to share of them all below. At the same time, we'll give you a quick overview of what each has to offer.

Surface Pro 7

This is largely a minor refresh to the Surface Pro 6 that launched last year. It features the same chassis design as its predecessor, with the exception of a USB-C port that has been added (finally). Inside, the Surface Pro 7 is available with one of three new 10th generation Intel Ice Lake processors: Core i3-1005G1, Core i5-1035G4, or Core i7-1065G7. Interestingly, battery life has actually taken a step backwards and is rated at up to 10.5 hours, versus 13.5 hours for the Surface Pro 6.

The Surface Pro 7 is available for preorder right now priced from $749.

Surface Laptop 3

The Surface Laptop 3 is now available in 13.5-inch and 15-inch form-factors. The 13-inch model is powered by Ice Lake processors (instead of Kaby Lake-R) -- Core i5-1035G7 or Core i7-1065G7 processors. The design language from last year largely carries over intact with the Surface Laptop 3, but customers can now purchase the laptop with either a bare metal finish (Black, Platinum, Sandstone) for the keyboard deck or with the more familiar Alcantara covering (Platinum, Cobalt Blue).

The 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 switches things up with a custom AMD Ryzen 7 3780U processor (Zen+), with is referred to as the Microsoft Surface Edition. The processor is nominally rated at 15W but can be configured to hit 25 watts if necessary. It's reported that onboard Radeon Vega GPU has 11 compute units and can deliver 1.2 teraflops compute performance.

Both the 13.5- and 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 devices include USB-C port (a first for the family), but like the Surface Pro 7, Thunderbolt 3 is not supported. The Surface Laptop 3 is available for preorder priced from $999 for the 13.5-inch model.

Surface Pro X

This is an all-new Surface device with a 13-inch display (2880x1920). The device is just 7.3mm thick and weighs in at 1.7 pounds. The big news with the Surface Pro X is that it uses an ARM processor; more specifically, the Microsoft SQ1 processor.  The SQ1 is based on the beefy Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx "desktop class" SoC, which is an 8-core design clocked at 3GHz. The chip is rated at 7 watts and is said to offer a 3x uplift in performance-per-watt versus the outgoing Surface Pro 6.

The Surface Pro X features dual USB-C ports, fast charging support, and standard LTE connectivity thanks to its Snapdragon roots. The Surface Pro X is also available for preorder, and feature a base price of $999.

Surface Neo and Surface Duo

While we couldn't get our hands on the two stars of the show -- the Surface Neo and Surface Duo -- we did get eyes on the devices which were roped off. But even in their prototype form, the look amazing. As we saw in the demos by Microsoft team members (including Surface chief Panos Panay), both devices feature dual displays with a central hinge (9 inches displays on the Neo, 5.6-inch displays on the Duo).

The Surface Neo is running an Intel Lakefield processor and the Windows 10X operating system (which is optimized for devices with dual displays), while the Surface Duo in its prototype form is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor and a modified version of Android 9. Both the Surface Neo and Surface Duo will go on sale during Holiday 2020 according to Microsoft.
