Microsoft's Latest Windows 10 'Skip Ahead' Preview Packs Bug Fixes And Narrator Improvements

Microsoft has caught a lot of flak over the last several months as updates that it has released for Windows 10 have left PCs with serious problems. The software giant has been working to remedy the lack of trust in its updates and has gone so far as to give users a way to delay updates until any potential issues with them have surfaced. This week Microsoft launched a new Windows 10 preview build that brings with it fixes for bugs and some improvements.

The update takes Windows 10 to build 18860, and it was initially made available for testers on March 20. The build is from the 20H1 branch and will be part of a Windows 10 update that will land in the first half of 2020. Only Windows Insiders that chose the Skip Ahead option will get the update. It's interesting that the Skip Ahead participants are getting 20H1 builds rather than 19H2 builds as might have been expected.

The build mostly focuses on fixing known issues and squashing bugs. Microsoft has a full list of the bug fixes that the preview brings here. Several of the fixes have to do with Narrator, those fixes address things like issues in reading cell content in Excel in certain situations and issues with it displaying "has finished loading" multiple times when loading a new page in Chrome. As you might expect with a Windows update, this one is launching with some known issues.

The 20H1 build has the following known issues:

  • Launching games that use anti-cheat software may trigger a bugcheck (GSOD).
  • Some Realtek SD card readers are not functioning properly.
  • Creative X-Fi sound cards are not functioning properly. Creative has released updated drivers for some affected X-Fi sound cards.
  • If you install any of the recent builds from the Skip Ahead and switch to either the Fast ring or the Slow ring, optional content such as enabling developer mode will fail. You will have to remain in the Fast ring to add/install/enable optional content. This is because optional content will only install on builds approved for specific rings.
