Minecraft Oculus Rift VR Support Coming To Windows 10 Platform In August

Microsoft and Mojang today are celebrating the one-year anniversary of the launch of Minecraft on the Windows 10 platform. Since that time, Mojang has pushed out 15 major updates for the game and has crushed over 6,000 bugs for what has become a worldwide smash hit.

So to celebrate its first birthday on Windows 10 (which itself is celebrating a birthday tomorrow), Mojang has a couple of surprises in store for gamers. The first is a new Villains Skin Pack, which can be purchased for $1.99.

“Grab it and join forces with Minecraft’s most dastardly denizens: slink from the shadows as the sinister Stronghold Seer, unleash the fury as the ferocious Lava Fiend, or, er, sell silverfish as the monstrous Silverfish Monger,” writes Mojang’s Marsh Davies.

A total of 17 skins are included in this pack, and a few of them will be given away absolutely free of charge.

But that’s not the biggest news coming from Mojang and Microsoft today. The pair announced that a free update will land in the next few weeks that will bring VR support for the Oculus Rift. A version of the game tailored for the Samsung Gear VR launched earlier this year, but the Oculus Rift, of course, adds external camera tracking to the mix for a more immersive experience. This will add a whole new dimension to playing Minecraft and is just one more way that Microsoft is at least trying to entice gamers to give Windows 10 a shot before the free upgrade expires.
