Mortal Kombat 11 Announced With A Brutal Cinematic Teaser Trailer
Nearly three decades ago (before some of you reading this were born), Mortal Kombat broke ground in the arcade gaming scene for its then-realistic looking graphics and ultra violent gameplay, highlighted by lethal finishing moves called fatalities. It spawned several followups, and in 2019, Warner Bros. Interactive will release Mortal Kombat 11, the bloodiest version yet.
In anticipation of the game's release, the publisher unveiled a two-and-a-half-minute trailer that spills more blood than a clumsy intern at a blood bank. Appropriately enough, the soundtrack for the savage gameplay is an original music track, "Immortal," created in collaboration with rapper 21 Savage. The bone-crunching trailer is mainly focused on Dark Raiden and Scorpion. It's delightfully violent (if you're into this sort of thing), though Warner Bros. Interactive insists there is more meat to the game than the pounds of flesh these characters extract from one another. Namely, there's a new Custom Character Variation System that gives players creative control over building customized versions of the character roster.
"By giving players more creative control, Mortal Kombat 11 is a testament to why this iconic franchise is so strong and increasingly relevant after more than 25 years," said David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. "This game showcases NetherRealm Studios’ extensive talent to innovate and create epic experiences for the Mortal Kombat fans and new players alike."
It will be interesting to see how that pans out, and whether the game will allow players to upload their custom characters for others to use—there's no mention of that, I'm just wishfully speculating.
The game features new and returning characters and a "time bending" story, all wrapped in a "new graphics engine showcasing every skull-shattering, eye-popping moment." That said, the trailer doesn't show any actual gameplay, so we'll have to wait until next year to see what it's really like.
Mortal Kombat 11 releases on April 23, 2019, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. It's available to pre-order now, and those who buy the game early will receive an extra playable character, Shao Kahn. The standard edition is priced at $59.99 and the premium edition at $99.99.
