Moto Z2 Play Adopts Snapdragon 626 And Trades Some Battery Life For Thinner Frame

Size matters, at least when it comes to smartphones. The Moto Z2 Play is rumored to be slimmer than its Z Play predecessor, but will sacrifice coveted battery life as a result. The device will also likely include an upgraded Qualcomm Snapdragon 626.

The Moto Z2 Play will be slightly under 6 millimeters in thickness and weigh in at 145 grams. The original Moto Z Play was a little under 7 millimeters and weighed 165 grams. Neither of these devices come close to the original Moto Z’s 5.19 millimeter thickness, however, Motorola is slowly inching its way back to this incredibly thin model.

The original Moto Z Play boasted a 3510mAh battery, however, the Z2 will only include a 3000mAh battery. This size reduction also decreases usage time from 50 to 30 hours. The original Moto Z Play had insanely good battery life, so this may not be as much of an issue for most users.

The Z2 Play appears to otherwise contain a number of upgrades, despite the smaller battery. The original Z Play incorporated a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 that ran eight cores at 2.0GHz. The Z2 Play will boast a Snapdragon 626 with a 2.2GHz clock speed. The Z Play contained 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage capacity, while the Z2 Play will include 4GB and 64GB. Both devices incorporate a Adreno 506 graphical processing unit.

The Z2 Play’s Super AMOLED display, 5.5-inch diagonal and 1080x1920 resolution will remain the same as the Z Play. The Z2’s 5-megapixel front-facing camera will also be the same, however, the main camera will be replaced by a 12-megapixel, f/1.7 component featuring dual auto-focus pixels. The Z2 may also include a dual LED selfie flash, instead of a single LED.

At the moment, all of the specifications are unofficial. The Moto Z2 Play will be released in Lunar Gray and Fine Gold sometime this summer.
