While we've seen plenty of action at the flagship level when it comes to the 2018 class of smartphones, we haven't seen much activity in the entry-level and mid-range sectors. Thankfully, Motorola hasn't forgotten about consumers that don't want to spend $700+ on a new smartphone. With that in mind, Motorola has unleashed a number of new smartphones in the Moto G6 and Moto E5 product families.

On the Moto G6 side of things, we have the Moto G6 and the Moto G6 Play. The Moto G6 comes with a 5.7-inch Full HD display (2160x1080) and an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor. You'll find 3GB or 4GB of RAM onboard depending on if you select the 32GB of 64GB storage options. The 3,000 mAh battery supports 15W turbo charging through its USB-C port, and you'll find a microSD slot and a headphone jack (which is becoming more of a rarity these days).

On the camera front, the Moto G6 features a dual camera setup on the rear, which pairs a 12MP primary sensor and a 5MP secondary sensor. The secondary sensor is what's used to apply depth-of-field effects. Up front, you'll find an 8MP camera for selfie duties and video conferencing.

The Moto G6 Play, as with previous "G Play" variants, is all about the battery. In this case, it's packing a 4,000 mAh unit. Unfortunately, the Moto G6 Play is using a [now, seemingly ancient] microUSB port and supports slower 10W charging. Other specs take a hit too, including the display which gets a downgrade to 720p (1440x720) and a slower quad-core processor (Snapdragon 427). Further pushing the Moto G6 Play down the ranks are either 2GB or 3GB of RAM which is paired with 16GB or 32GB of internal storage respectively. As for the cameras, you'll find a single 13MP sensor on the rear and an 8MP sensor up front.

Moving on, we have the Moto E5 Plus and Moto E5 Play. The Moto E family is quite popular with in the prepaid wireless carrier realm, and we see no reason why that will change with the generation. The Moto E5 Plus features an octa-core Snapdragon 435 processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. You'll also find a 6-inch 1440x720 display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. Motorola has you covered on the camera front with a 12MP sensor on the back and an 8MP sensor on the front. The star of the show, however, is the massive 5,000 mAh battery, which supports 15W charging.

Finally, we come to the E5 Play, which is to put it lightly is the runt of the litter. It comes with a 5.2-inch 1080x720 display and a quad-core Snapdragon 427 processor. You get just 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and a smallish 2,800 mAh battery. You'll find an 8MP camera on the back and a 5MP selfie camera up front.

We should note that all of the above-mentioned smartphones are running Android 8.0 Oreo and will ship this spring. The Moto G6 and Moto G6 Play are priced at $249 and $199 respectively. Pricing hasn't yet been announced for the Moto E5 Plus and Moto E5 Play.
