Motorola's Moto 360 Smartwatch Tipped To Release In July For Around $340
There's plenty of skepticism floating around the web on whether or not smartwatches can truly represent the next big thing in technology, but perhaps two things working in its favor are Android Wear and the Moto 360. The former is Google's optimized version of Android built specifically for smartwatches, and the latter is Motorola's take on the smartwatch category, which is rumored to be available in July.
A French-language website tipped the summer release, adding that it will cost 249 Euros (that converts to around $340 in U.S. currency). At a glance, it would seem the Moto 360 is yet another overpriced wrist wearable in an unproven category, but this isn't just another smartwatch.
Unlike the bulk of early designs from other manufacturers, it appears Motorola has made a concerted effort to remove some geek-inspired aesthetics from the fashion side. Looking at some early photos of the Moto 360, it looks more like a classic time piece rather than a nerd's interpretation of what a smartwatch should look like.
"The wristwatch has been through several evolutions since it first became a popular fashion accessory more than a 100 years ago. From mechanical to electronic movements, analog to digital faces, the wristwatch has been reinvented several times over, but the basic design has endured for a century because of its elegance and usefulness ‘at a glance.’ Our vision for Moto 360 was to celebrate that history as we reimagined the wristwatch for the future," Motorola explained in a blog post back in March.

The Moto 360 has a round face and uses premium materials. Motorola said it will be available in a variety of style options -- it looks as though you'll have the option of using different bands, both leather and metal. During normal operation, you'll see a black analog watch face, which not only gives it an elegant look, it also helps save battery life. However, Android Wear looms underneath and will instantly wake up to your "OK Google" commands.
It's still a bit early, though the Moto 360 is one of the more intriguing options out there. Expect to learn more during Google I/O in late June.
