Nest Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Router Rumored With Integrated Google Assistant Speaker Beacons
We know that Google has a hardware event coming up next month, but what exactly will the company introduce? One of the items is rumored to be a new mesh router system, presumably built around the latest Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax)
standard. Assuming the info is accurate, it will be sold as a "Nest Wifi" system with accompanying beacons.
already sells a mesh router called Google Wifi
. Pricing starts at $99, which gets you the main router, which is covers up to 1,500 square feet. There is also a 3-pack available for $259. By the power of mesh networking, the 3-pack covers larger spaces, up to 4,500 square feet.
Citing sources who are apparently familiar with the matter, 9To5Google says a refreshed model looms, with the new Nest Wifi name. Those sources say the new router will be accompanied by speaker beacons with Google Assistant built-in. Google Assistant looks as though it will be the standout feature, though we imagine the new router will be faster than the current one as well.
The package is said to consist of a main router with two speaker beacons. Interestingly, only the speakers would feature Google Assistant integration—the main router will not. As with the current system, the beacons would connect to the main router wirelessly to extend network coverage.
Users would be able to control their wireless network with their voice. For example, a user would be able to bark out a command to pause Internet connectivity in certain rooms for or specific devices, if a speaker beacon is within earshot. It will also be interesting to see if Google will bake in smart home automation features as well.
As for the design, Google is apparently aiming for a sleeker setup that blends in better with the home. In addition, Google will offer the Nest Wifi in three color options, rather than just a white model.
