Netflix Cracks Whip On Unauthorized U.S. Streaming Overseas Via VPNs And Proxies

Netflix spread its wings earlier this month, expanding its global footprint with an additional 130 international markets. While that news can be seen as a big win for overseas customers that have long waited for the ability to stream Netflix content, there are new restrictions being handed down to ensure that Netflix keeps its content providers happy.

With that huge global expansion comes a big crackdown on people that are using unauthorized methods to gain access to Netflix content that wouldn’t otherwise be available in their current country due to licensing restrictions. That means people using a VPN or proxy to access a Netflix account (even if a U.S. user is accessing his or her account from while traveling overseas) will soon be facing a brick wall.

“Some members use proxies or ‘unblockers’ to access titles available outside their territory, writes David Fullagar, Netflix VP of Content Delivery Architecture. “That means in coming weeks, those using proxies and unblockers will only be able to access the service in the country where they currently are.

Netflix’s terms of use policy already contains language that forbids the use of technology to circumvent geoblocks, but this will be the streaming giant’s first big attempt at thwarting the practice once and for all.

“We look forward to offering all of our content everywhere and to consumers being able to enjoy all of Netflix without using a proxy,” added Fullagar.

Netflix says that it is taking action to “respect and enforce content licensing by geographic location” with respect to TV shows and movies. The company is working its way towards making its vast catalog of movies and TV shows available to everyone, regardless of where they are located around the globe. However, Fullagar cautions, “We have a ways to go before we can offer people the same films and TV series everywhere.”
