Netflix On Nintendo Switch Is A No-Brainer So What's The Hold-Up?

After the floptastic run that Nintendo had with the Wii U, the Switch has been a breath of fresh air for the Japanese gaming giant. First launched in early 2017, the Nintendo Switch has gone on to become the fastest-selling game console in U.S. history. Given the number of awesome gaming consoles that have been released over the past three decades from a number of manufactures, that is an incredible feat.

With nearly 5 million Switch consoles sold in the U.S. alone since March 3rd, 2017, you would think that a company like Netflix would be itching to gets its app onto the console. Netflix has apps for just about every mobile platform you could imagine and is installed by default on many Smart TV and media streamers. The Nintendo Switch has a 6.2-inch screen and is portable, so it would make a perfectly adequate viewing platform for people on-the-go.

However, Netflix has yet to release an app even though the platform supports streaming apps. In fact, Hulu launched its app for the Nintendo Switch back in early November. And Netflix didn't make matters any better with the following tweet over the weekend:

That's definitely discouraging, but Polygon reached out to Nintendo for clarification on the [now deleted] tweet. “We are still exploring the opportunity with Nintendo, but don’t have definitive plans to share at this time,” said a Netflix spokesman in a statement.

So, the comment doesn't exactly shut the door on the appearance of an app, but it also doesn't give us a timetable for when one would be available. But what could possibly be the holdup? Hulu is already on the platform, so there shouldn't be any technical hurdles that Netflix would have to clear to make the leap to the Nintendo Switch. The only thing that we can think of is that there is possibly some legal wrangling going on in the background between the two companies.

Whatever the case, not putting the Netflix app on the Nintendo Switch is a missed opportunity.
