New iPhone 7 Plus Mockup Has Us Singing The Blues In More Ways Than One

It’s getting close to that time again — the time every year when Apple releases a new generation of iPhones. Last year, we were introduced to the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus — both of which were supercharged versions of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s Plus that came before them.

This time around, Apple will present the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. For those that are expecting a dramatic departure in design with Apple’s newest smartphones (which is usually the case for non “S” models), you’re going to be disappointed. The overall look is just a further refinement of the current iPhone family.

To see how that will play out when the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are introduced in early September, there’s a new video of mockup making its way around the internet which should give you a good idea of what to expect:

The first thing that should catch your eye should be the striking blue exterior finish, which would join the existing silver, space grey, gold, and rose gold finishes that we’ve grown accustomed to. The blue finish has been rumored for the past few months, and it does look pretty good here (now if only Apple would go one step further and introduce a nice shade of red for the iPhone family...).

The mockup also reveals to us the dual-camera lens setup that is exclusive to the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus (the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 will make do with a single camera), and dual-speaker setup at the bottom of the device. The addition of a second speaker also means that there’s no longer a 3.5mm headphone jack for your “legacy” headphones, which means that you’ll have to use 1) a Lighting to 3.5mm adapter, 2) Lighting headphones, or 3) Bluetooth headphones. We’ve been talking about Apple jettisoning the 3.5mm jack for months, and seeing this mockup doesn’t make us any more accepting of Apple’s plans. The iPhone 7 Plus mockup also has three connectors on the back, which reportedly function similarly to the Smart Connector found on the iPad Pro family.

Of course, this mockup is based on speculation that is currently floating around the web and Apple’s final product could end up looking slightly different when it bows. As for what’s inside the phone, a next generation Apple A10 processor and M10 coprocessor are almost guaranteed to make an appearance, and RAM is supposedly being bumped to 3GB (at least for the iPhone 7 Plus).

The only real unknown is the display resolution. The 1334x750 resolution of the iPhone 6s seems downright puny for what is considered a flagship-level device for Apple, so perhaps we will see it bumped to 1920x1080 for the iPhone 7. And perhaps its wishful thinking for the iPhone 7 Plus to move a QHD display to put in on more equal footing with its Android competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
