Nintendo Boss Shoots Down Rumors Of New Switch Console Reveal At E3

Over the past month or so, we've been hearing lots of rumors concerning at least two follow-ups to the Nintendo Switch. Earlier this week, reports indicated that a Nintendo Switch Lite would launch in June with a more attractive price point than the $299 original.

Today, however, Nintendo CEO Shuntaro Furukawa made it clear that a June launch is out of the question. "We have no plans to announce that at this year's E3 in June," said Furukawa. He also added that "[We are] always working on new hardware and we will announce it when we are able to sell it.”

The Nintendo Switch has proven to be popular with gamers, partly due to the fact that it is a hybrid system that allows you to hook it up to your big screen TV or take it on the go in portable form. It also doesn't hurt that that are incredibly strong first-party titles available for the platform like Super Mario Odyssey, Zelda Breath of the Wild, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

The alleged Nintendo Switch Lite will reportedly be a smaller, even more portable console that will still be able to plug into a TV. There have also been reports that it might be more rugged to stand up to the abuse of kids (who might be more prone to drove the console). 

There are also reports that an even more powerful Switch would be made available at a later date. We don't expect a massive increase in processing power, but some have likened the performance upgrade to the transition from the 3DS to the New 3DS.

To date, Nintendo has sold nearly 35 million Switch consoles worldwide, but its quarter-over-quarter sales performance has slowed dramatically. A hardware refresh -- as we've seen with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 -- would go a long way towards attracting new interest for the console.
