Nintendo CDN Update Confirms Wildly Popular Fortnite Is Coming To Nintendo Switch
Back when the Nintendo Switch first arrived, our biggest gripe was the lack of top-tier games for the platform, outside of the excellent The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which initially sold more copies than the hybrid console itself. Oh, how times have changed. There are now a lot more compelling titles for the Switch, and more on the way. One of them appears to be Fortnite, the crazy-popular battle royale shooter that has eclipsed PlayerUnknown's Battleground (PUBG) in concurrent user count.
Rumors that Fortnite was heading to the Switch kicked up a notch over the last week, especially after a list of games from Nintendo leaked online. The leaked list showed which games Nintendo would announce at E3 are coming to the Switch, and Fortnite was one of them. Reinforcing the rumor is new code discovered in the latest Nintendo eShop update, which also points to Fortnite arriving on the Switch.
Digging through the code, a hacker found a reference to Fortnite, which pretty much confirms this is happening. There's even an icon for the game that will presumably be used on the home screen once Fortnite is live on the Switch. All that is left is an official announcement by Nintendo and developer Epic Games.
We are also looking forward to accompanying details. It is not known if the full game will arrive on the Switch, or if the experience will be limited to the battle royale mode without access to the Save The World Campaign. Either way, we anticipate this being a big release—one of the most popular games on the planet (at the moment) is about to collide with arguably the hottest console.
It will also be interesting to see what Epic Games and Nintendo have planned for cross-play support. We assume it will be included, allowing Switch gamers to go up against players on other platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Android, and iOS. But, we will have to wait and see.
E3 kicks off this Saturday, June 9 and runs through Tuesday, June 12.
