Nintendo's been working on a mysterious new game console codenamed NX, one that's been the topic of various speculation and rumors over the past year. As if any additional intrigue was needed, Nintendo revealed in its quarter financial report it will launch next year and that it will be a "brand-new concept." Let the guessing games continue.

"For our dedicated video game platform business, Nintendo is currently developing a gaming platform codenamed 'NX' with a brand-new concept. NX will be launched in March 2017 globally," Nintendo stated in a blurb that was buried on page three of its quarterly financial report. Later on in the report, Nintendo added that it's "not disclosing specific information as it is provisional."

It's a bit unusual to bury a major hardware announcement in an earnings report, though Nintendo also took to social media to drum up excitement by posting the launch time frame on Twitter.

Nintendo's had a bit of rough time competing in the living room console market as of late. While sales of its original Wii topped 100 million units since being released in 2006, the Wii U has been far less successful, with Nintendo having sold less than 13 million Wii U consoles since its 2012 debut.

It will be interesting to see what the NX brings to the table. At one point there was chatter that the NX would support Google's Android platform, but a Nintendo spokesperson quickly shot down the rumor. Beyond that, Nintendo's been mum on the details, and it looks like that will continue to be the case until it launches next year.
