Nintendo SNES Classic Production 'Dramatically Increased' To Neutralize eBay Scalpers

While there are still some questions marks regarding the availability of the Nintendo Switch during the hectic holiday shopping season, Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime is giving some hope to those looking to score an SNES Classic.

In a recent interview, Fils-Aime says that he would caution those looking to scoop up the retro console against relying on scalpers to get their fix. “I would strongly urge you not to over-bid on an SNES Classic on any of the auction sites... You shouldn't [have to] pay more than $79.99.”

He went on to add that production of the SNES Classic has been “dramatically increased” compared to the NES Classic, which was in short supply during its entire production run, much to the chagrin of gamers (but to the delight of resellers, which are still selling the $59.99 console for $200 or more).

While this no doubt sounds like wonderful news, you can't blame us if we remain skeptical about Nintendo's promise to provide adequate supplies of a hot gaming console. Nintendo made the same promises with both the NES Classic and the Nintendo Switch. And earlier this month, Fils-Aime didn't want to fully commit to there being enough Nintendo Switch inventory to satisfy demand for Christmas shopping.

“Certainly, the demand is there, and our supply chain is there” said Fils-Aime last week. “Are we going to have enough for the holiday? That’s what we are focused on.”
