Nintendo Switch Hands-On Event Scheduled For January 13th in NYC

Winter is coming and so is a highly anticipated Nintendo event. Nintendo is hosting a Switch private five-hour hands-on event in New York City on Friday, January 13th. The exact location and details for the event are not yet available.

The private NYC debut will follow a streamed presentation the evening before in Tokyo. Nintendo is currently referring to the January 12th event in Japan as its “Tokyo webcast". The Tokyo webcast will be held live for investors and media. The invitation stated that the event is intended to "further emphasize some of the details that Nintendo plans to announce the prior evening during its Nintendo Switch Presentation in Tokyo."

The event will supposedly reveal more details about the Switch’s hardware, price, and release date. Pricing is one of the biggest questions, since prices ranging from as low as $299 to as high as $485 have appeared on the internet.

The Switch is a gaming console that can rest in a dock, allowing it to be played by multiple people, and easily “switch” to a portable device. There are also detachable Joy-Con controllers that can be removed from either side of the Nintendo Switch, or gamers can purchase an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Multiple players can bring their Nintendo Switch’s together to enjoy multiplayer face-to-face gaming.

Numerous developers are currently designing games for the Nintendo Switch, some of which include Activision, Bethesda, SEGA, UBISOFT, Unity, and Warner Brothers. Other corporations have collaborated with Nintendo on device’s hardware and software including NVIDIA, which aided in the development of the hardware and API’s for the Nintendo Switch.

The most recent rumor is that the console will sport a 6.2-inch display with a 720p resolution. It will also be the first time that a Nintendo device uses a capacitive multi-touch panel. The 3DS and Wii U both used resistive, single-touch displays. The multi-touch panel could support gestures and therefore be great for gaming.

As of right now, the Nintendo Switch release date is March 2017.
