Nintendo Switch Sales Hit 10 Million Units Nine Months Post Launch

Nintendo has announced that the Switch console has hit a major milestone: global console sales have hit 10 million units. The impressive part about hitting the milestone is that the console has only been available for nine months. The Switch and the SNES Classic Edition have sold so well they pushed the overall gaming market to 19% growth.

Nintendo thinks that the success of the Switch is thanks in part to the hybrid nature of the console. You can play it at home on the big screen just like any conventional game console. However, you can also take the Switch with you thanks to its own integrated screen and use it as a portable. The console also supports multiplayer right out of the box with the innovative Joy-Con controller.

Nintendo also has a strong library of titles that are only available on the Switch with games like Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as well as Mario Kart 8 only offered on the Switch. While first-party exclusives are a big deal, many other developers are also supporting the console with third-party titles.

"As you can see in people’s living rooms, on a plane or riding the subway, fans all over the world can enjoy playing Nintendo Switch wherever they go," said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. "The response from fans has been great, and we’re doing our very best to satisfy demand during the holiday shopping season."

The Switch continues to sell strongly and has been beating sales numbers of both the PS4 and Xbox One over the last few months. Nintendo is still struggling to keep up with demand months after launch.
