Nintendo Switch Online Gains A Game Rewind Feature That Some Call A Cheat

NES Game Rewind
Casual gamers rejoice—Nintendo has a rewind feature to its online NES library of games for the Switch console. Appropriately called Game Rewind, players can take a mulligan on a mistimed jump or any other unfortunate maneuver, and roll back the tape to a point prior to when things went very wrong. Nifty, right?

That depends on who you ask. Some people consider the function a cheat of sorts. They are of the 'git gud' variety and, well, bless their judgemental hearts. For gamers who are not interested in 'gitting gud' and just want to go back a few ticks to before they got wrecked, the Game Rewind feature is a boon. Here's a look at how it works...

This is not a new concept, by any stretch. Going all the back to Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (released in 2003), the ability to rewind time was a central plot element and game mechanic. That is a bit different, though.

More recently, Nintendo implemented a similar feature in its SNES Classic Edition console, and it can also be found in Capcom's Mega Man Legacy Collection. Now it can be used with every NES game available in Nintendo Switch Online service. Members have access to dozens of NES games, and I can see this being helpful in titles like Ghost 'n Goblins and of course Super Mario Bros. 3. It's also worth noting that the Game Rewind function debuts as two more games get added to the library, those being Wrecking Crew and Donkey Kong 3.

On the SNES Classic Edition, the rewind feature is around 1 minute for action games and 5 minutes for RPGs. I haven't had a chance to test this, so it's not clear (to me) how long it is on the Switch. To use it, however, players press ZL + ZR at the same time to bring up the Suspend Menu, then roll back to a point in time before things went sideways.

Enjoy, cheaters gamers!
