Nokia, once a name synonymous with popular "dumb" phones and early smartphones has lost quite a bit of its luster over the years. With the rise of the iPhone and Android-based devices, and its failed marriage with Microsoft, Nokia-branded devices have seen better days.

Nokia reset the clock, so to speak, with the launch of the Nokia 6 mid-range smartphone earlier this year courtesy of HMD, and it is set to launch a new flagship later this year. That flagship, the Nokia 9, is expected to carry with it flagship-worthy specs that could make even stalwart Samsung Galaxy or iPhone fans blush.

The Nokia 9 is expected to be powered by Qualcomm’s latest and greatest smartphone SoC: the Snapdragon 835. The Snapdragon 835 has found its way into the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ paired with 4GB of RAM, but the Nokia 9 is said to raise the roof with 6GB of RAM. Other features rumored for the smartphone include a 5.5-inch QHD display, a 22MP rear camera with Carl Zeiss optics and a 12MP selfie camera for the image obsessed.

One other tidbit that has been uncovered, is that the Nokia 9 will feature OXO Audio, which makes use of advanced 360-degree spatial audio technology. Additional features that are reportedly on deck for the Nokia 9 include up to 128GB of internal storage, Qualcomm Quick Charge 4 support, iris scanner, fingerprint scanner, IP68 dust/water resistance, a 3800 mAh battery and Android 7.1.2 Nougat

The Nokia 9 looks to pack quite a punch, and appears to have a fat enough feature set to go up against the best in the Android smartphone arena. However, the question remains -- is the Nokia brand still strong enough to sway customers away from devices like the Galaxy S8, or even the LG G6? It may all come down to pricing in the end…
