Nokia: Nexus 7 Tablet Infringes Our Wi-Fi Patents
The way things go in the tech industry, it seems you can't so much as release a fart without the flatulence police claiming a patent violation. It stinks, but it's the way it is, so does it really come as a surprise that a company is crying foul over Google's Nexus 7 tablet?
That company is Nokia, which claims the Asus-built tablet Google unveiled at its I/O conference last week violates certain patents, reportedly in relation to wireless technologies. Nokia didn't come out and say which specific patents the Nexus 7 supposedly runs afoul of, but it's believed they have to do with the 802.11 standard.
Could this be the backup plan Nokia chairman Risto Siilasmaa referenced during a live television appearance a week ago? Nokia is totally invested in Microsoft's Windows Phone platform, but if that falls through, Siilasmaa made it clear Nokia has other options. Perhaps one of those options is going after companies in Apple-like fashion... to an extent.
There's no indication Nokia is seeking to have the Nexus 7 tablet banned in the U.S. or anywhere else. More likely, Nokia wants Google and Asus to pony up the appropriate patent license fees.
