Nokia Selects Qualcomm Chips For First WP7 Smartphones

Nokia and Microsoft obviously belong in the same sentence together, but Qualcomm? That's a new one. The company is reportedly getting set to join the Nokia/WP7 party in a big way, with Reuters reporting that Nokia is negotiating with "several chipset suppliers" for future Windows Phone handsets after selecting Qualcomm for use in their first MS-based smartphones.

This is obviously a major win for Qualcomm. The company's Snapdragon and Hummingbird chips have found their way into a slew of smartphones, but having a deal with Nokia further cements their lead in the industry. Of course, with Nokia looking at other suppliers, that could soon change. But still, the first Nokias with WP7 will indeed sport Qualcomm chips, and we all know how easy it is to stick with something familiar if it's all working out.

We'll keep an eye on future developments; wouldn't it be interesting if NVIDIA got into the ring, too?
