Nokia And Zeiss Rejoin To Make Sweet Android Phone Cameras
Do you remember when Nokia went all-in with Microsoft's Windows Phone platform? While Nokia chose to go with an underdog, it hoped to compete in the smartphone space by focusing on camera performance, and many of its devices featured camera sensors with high megapixel counts. Well, much has changed since then. These days HMD Global owns the rights to market Nokia branded phones (and tablets), and while the landscape is decidedly different this time around, camera performance is still a point of focus. As such, the Finnish startup announced today that it has sign an exclusive partnership with Zeiss to design optics and software for upcoming Nokia phones.
Zeiss is no stranger to the Nokia brand, even though the players behind the scenes have changed over the years. The relationship between Zeiss and Nokia dates back more than a decade and includes the introduction of the world's first multi-megapixel mobile phone, among other achievements. Going forward, Zeiss and Nokia will once again look to shake up the industry with class leading camera optics.

"Collaborating with Zeiss is an important part of our commitment to always deliver the very best experience for our customers. Our fans want more than a great smartphone camera, they want a complete imaging experience that doesn’t just set the standard but redefines it. Camera performance is an important part of the smartphone experience, and for some users it is also a deciding factor. That is the reason why Huawei inked a deal with Leica, another major player in the camera market, and it is also the driving force behind HMD reviving Nokia's partnership with Zeiss.
While hardware is a major point of focus in this collaboration, it is not the only part.
"We will exclusively work together in the smartphone category," Florian Seiche, president of HMD, stated in a phone press conference, according to Forbes. "It is more than just hardware, it goes right across the software, the hardware, the lens, the entire experience."
Zeiss will not have its fingerprint on any Nokia-branded phones that have already been announced for this year. While no time frame has been given, we suspect that Nokia phones equipped with Zeiss hardware and software will start hitting the market sometime in 2018.
