NVIDIA's 120Hz 4K HDR Big Format Gaming Displays Reportedly Delayed
NVIDIA made at splash at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) earlier this year when the company unveiled its Big Format Gaming Display (BFGD) initiative, essentially living room displays (not technically TVs because they lack a tuner) with fancy features built for gaming. Exciting stuff to be sure, though it also appears the actual release of BFGD models is being delayed until next year.
All of the BFGD models that are coming out are 65-inch displays with a juicy 4K resolution and support for high dynamic range (HDR) visuals. They also feature fast 120Hz refresh rates and low latencies that make them closer to a giant monitor than just another TV, and of course G-Sync support for smooth gameplay.
Several of NVIDIA's hardware partners are waiting in the wings for the green light to assemble and release their own models, including Acer, ASUS, and HP. However, the folks at Hardware.info caught up with HP at Gamescom, and a spokesperson for the company reportedly said the 65-inch screens driving its upcoming BFGD model will be available in the first quarter of 2019.
We were hoping they would make a debut this year, but if HP's information is accurate, we're still at least half a year away from an actual retail launch. There's no guarantee things will not be delayed further, either. It took a long time for Acer and ASUS to release their Predator 27 and ROG Swift PG27UQ monitors, respectively, which were the first (and still only) 4K resolution, 144Hz monitors combining HDR and G-Sync support.
Pricing is the other big question. HP was a little more cagey in that regard, but apparently said it will probably shake out in the 4,000 and 5,000 euros range (around $4,640 to $5,800 in US currency). HP also reportedly said its model will feature an integrated soundbar, for what that's worth.
In any event, take all of this information with a grain a salt. We'll have to wait and see how things actually shake out.
