NVIDIA Confirms Failures In Early Batch Of GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FE Cards
There is an issue with the first round GeForce RTX 2080 Ti graphics cards that at the moment appear to only be affecting NVIDIA's overclocked Founders Edition model, a company representative confirmed in NVIDIA's GeForce support forum. The confirmation follows a rash of complaints of GeForce RTX 2080 Ti cards experiencing various issues, from blue screen of death (BSOD) errors to artifacts and other symptoms.
"Limited test escapes from early boards caused the issues some customers have experienced with RTX 2080 Ti Founders Edition. We stand ready to help any customers who are experiencing problems," forum moderator 'Tim@NVIDIA' stated.
Tim went on to recommended that affected users visit NVIDIA's support portal to chat live with the company's tech support team, or utilize email "and we'll take care of it."
It's not clear where the problem lies, or if there are multiple issues at play. There are a plethora of things that can cause wonky behavior in graphics cards, including faulty memory, poor cooling, defects in the PCB, issues with the GPU itself, and so forth.
We also don't know how widespread the issue is, though NVIDIA's statement does seem to suggest that any errors users might be seeing on third-party cards are unrelated. NVIDIA is not likely to share exact RMA numbers. In addition, retailers in the UK told PCGamesN that they are not seeing unusually high return rates on third-party GeForce RTX 2080 Ti cards (and only NVIDIA sells Founders Edition cards).
"I just got off the phone with NVIDIA again, and expressed my concern for the amount of failures being reported on this card. He assured me that it was not a widespread problem. I'm a bit more than skeptical, but they would try to send a new card out faster. Not happy at all over here," GeForce forum user 'Druners' wrote.
The GeForce RTX 2080 Ti is NVIDIA's flagship consumer card for gaming. It's built around the company's Turing GPU with dedicated hardware for real-time ray tracing in conjunction with Microsoft's DirectX Raytracing (DXR) API. The Founders Edition model sells for $1,199 on Nvidia's website and is currently out of stock.
