NVIDIA's New Game Ready Driver Delivers Up To 23% FPS Boost In Apex Legends, Ultra-Low Latency Mode

NVIDIA is promising a big performance improvement along with new features in its new Gamescom Game Ready Driver, which was released this morning. Probably the most exciting benefit for gamers comes in the performance uplift, which specifically targets Apex Legends, Battlefield V, Forza Horizon 4, Strange Brigade, and World War Z.

NVIDIA says that its driver optimizations allow for a performance boost of up to 23 percent in the aforementioned titles compared to previous Game Ready Driver releases. Apex Legends sees the most significant increase at 1080p resolution on the GeForce RTX 2080 Super (the quoted 23 percent uplift), while the GeForce RTX 2060 Super sees a nearly 20 percent uplift at 1440p resolution in Forza Horizon 4. You can see a full rundown of FPS improvement in the chart below:

However, improving frame rates isn't the only thing that NVIDIA is addressing with this latest driver update. It has also introduced what it calls an Ultra-Low Latency Mode which adds "just in time" frame scheduling which feeds frames to the GPU just before they need to be rendered. According to NVIDIA, this reduces latency by as much as 33 percent while giving gamers the "sensation" that their titles are being payed back at higher frame rates.

NVIDIA says that the new Ultra-Low Latency Mode works the best with games that are GPU bound when the frame rate is hovering between 60 fps and 100 fps. At this time, this new mode is supported on all NVIDIA GPUs in DX9 and DX11 games, as both DX12 and Vulkan games can decide when to schedule frames.

If that wasn't enough, there's a new Turing Integer Scaling option that can sharpen visual fidelity in both retro and line art titles. This helps to cut down on the blurriness that can take place when those titles are blown up to fit the display. Turing Integer Scaling is only available on GeForce RTX and GeForce GTX 16 Series graphics cards (which is quite obvious given the Turing right there in the name).

There are two other features that we'll call out in this new Game Ready release. NVIDIA has added support for 30-bit color across all GeForce and TITAN product lines which boosts color representation to over 1 billion shades. Finally, NVIDIA has validated three new monitors to be G-SYNC compatible: the ASUS VG27A, ACER CP3271, and ACER XB273K GP.
