OnePlus 6 Design Likely Foreshadowed By The Newly Launched Oppo R15

Given the design similarities between previous Oppo smartphone designs compared to their OnePlus counterparts, we just got big glimpse at what to expect when the OnePlus 6 is unveiled later this year. The Oppo R15 was officially unveiled this week in China, and for better or worse, it comes with a rather prominent display notch (a la the iPhone X).

The Oppo R15 has a 6.3-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2280x1080 that is covered in Gorilla Glass 5. While the overall look of the device (at least from the front) will likely mirror that of the upcoming OnePlus 6, there will be big differences with the internal components. The Oppo R15 features an octa-core MediaTek Helio P60 SoC paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

The OnePlus 6, on the other hand, will incorporate the "new hotness" Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The Oppo R15 features a microSD slot that can support up to 256GB of storage, but there's no word on if the OnePlus 6 will offer such functionality. Both smartphones will run Android Oreo 8.1, feature dual rear cameras, Bluetooth 4.2 and 802.11ac Wi-Fi. The OnePlus 6, however, is rumored to included wireless charging this time around.

We should note that the OnePlus 6 already leaked earlier this year showing off the notched display along with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. We know that the display notch is disappointing to many Android enthusiasts -- especially considering that no Android phone will feature the swanky, front-facing 3D camera system for facial recognition like the iPhone X anytime soon -- but at least Google is embracing the emerging design trend with support in Android P.

Android P will be released later this year and adds "display cutout" support along with new APIs to help apps wrap around the notch. "You can check whether the current device has a cutout by calling getDisplayCutout(), and then determine the location and shape of the cutout area using DisplayCutout," wrote Dave Burke, Google VP of Engineering the Android P Developer Preview was released earlier this month. "A new window layout attribute, layoutInDisplayCutoutMode, lets you tell the system how and when lay out your content relative to the cutout area."
