OnePlus One To Receive Lollipop Update Later This Month

It's been well over a month since OnePlus teased an Android 5.0 Lollipop update to OnePlus One owners. During that time, the latest version of Google's open-source mobile operating system has doubled in Android penetration, going from being installed on 1.6 percent of Android devices to 3.3 percent. So, when can you expect to see Lollipop unwrapped on OnePlus One handsets?

The anticipated over-the-air (OTA) rollout for CyanogenMod 12S is on or before March 30, 2015, and for its own Lollipop-based OxygenOS, the updated ROM will push out on or before March 27, 2015. That's a bit later than OnePlus was original shooting for, which is the result of a few unexpected issues; including an unforeseen OS signing issue that OnePlus says has recently been resolved.

It also ran into trouble with the camera module being unstable on Lollipop. Instead of requiring a simple tweak or update, OnePlus went and rebuilt it for compatibility, the company said.

"Several other crucial drivers, including our Wi-Fi drivers, also needed to be updated to work flawlessly with the upgrade. Admittedly, it took a little more time than we had planned, but we only release updates that we are proud of; that means refusing to take shortcuts or deliver sub-par experiences," OnePlus said.

As for the dates, OnePlus is going out on a bit of a limb and promising to either meet the aforementioned deadlines, or give away five 64GB OnePlus One devices to its fans if either one is missed. To be eligible, just post a reply to the announcement.
