Overwatch Petra Deathmatch Map Drops Next Week And Looks Like A Blast

Overwatch Petra Map

Overwatch is getting ready to celebrate its second anniversary with a major event, and coinciding with that is a new brand new map called Petra. The new map is located in Jordan and brings Deathmatch gameplay to competitive gamers who are itching to climb the leaderboard, with "heroes facing off against one another until one hero scores enough eliminations to win the match."

"Take in Petra’s majestic views, from high vistas to twisting passageways and deep caverns. Travel along deadly cliffs, but be careful to not fall off! A dilapidated bridge stretches across the map, and the ground underneath it can crumble away to reveal a lethal pit. Hopping on a green jump pad will boost you up to Petra’s higher levels and unlock new strategic possibilities for you," Blizzard explains.

Players will get to do battle in and around famous ruins. And if a recent leak proves true, players will also have access to at least eight new skins, hundreds of items, and the return of seasonal events and skins, all of which are expected to be part of the Overwatch Anniversary event that kicks off this week.

As for the gameplay in Petra, it looks like much of the focus is on close-quarter combat, which could mean less opportunities for snipers. There will be breakable floors as well, which you can see in the official trailer, and a new health pack (which sits atop a breakable floor in the trailer).

This is all part of Season 10 of Competitive Play. Unlocked at level 25, Competitive Play is for players who want a more serious experience than Overwatch's Quick Play or Arcade modes. To get started, players must first complete 10 placement matches to obtain an initial skill rating between 1 and 5,000 (the higher the number, the better the skill). Players are also assigned a tier based on their rating, including Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master, or Grandmaster.

The new Deathmatch Petra map will be available to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on May 22, the start of the Overwatch Anniversary event, which runs through June 11.
